Scottish Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate the power of opportunity, support and determination and Ewan’s journey is a strong example of how the right pathway can create lasting change.
Ewan’s route into employment wasn’t traditional. After leaving school at 14, he spent several years out of formal education. Looking back, he recognises that he wasn’t ready at that stage to think about what his future might look like.
“I just wasn’t in the right headspace back then,” he reflects. “I wasn’t thinking long-term.”
As he got older, Ewan began to reassess his direction and made the decision to pursue a more stable and positive path. With the support of a Skills Development Scotland adviser, he enrolled in college and achieved qualifications in Maths and English, rebuilding his confidence and preparing for employment.
That progress led him to the Tigers and Morgan Sindall Joint Venture Apprenticeship programme.
The journey began with a 12-week pre-apprenticeship course, where Ewan gained his CSCS card and developed essential employability skills. He then progressed to a Modern Apprenticeship and gained his qualification in General Construction Operations.
In 2023, after successfully completing his placement, Ewan secured permanent employment with Paradigm Landscapes as a Junior Landscaper.
For Ewan, this wasn’t just about getting a job. It was a fresh start.
“That was the big switch for me. Having structure, being part of a team and working towards something gave me focus. It felt like a clean slate.”
Continued Growth
When Ewan first shared his story in 2025, he described the previous year as his “best year.” Now, in 2026, that progress has continued.
Since gaining permanent employment in 2023, we have seen Ewan grow not only in skill but in confidence and independence. Over the past few years, he has celebrated his 21st birthday, passed his driving test and now drives himself to work each day. He has started enjoying holidays and experiences he previously wouldn’t have considered, while continuing to develop technically within his role and becoming a valued, reliable member of the Paradigm Landscapes team.
These milestones may seem simple on the surface, but they represent something much bigger — stability, responsibility, and the confidence that comes from earning, achieving and building a future.
“This last year has been my best year, and everything is slowly falling into place,” Ewan shared a statement that still rings true today.
A Manager’s Perspective
Sam Loder, Operations Manager at Paradigm Landscapes, has built a trusting and emotionally attuned relationship with Ewan since he joined the team.
“Since Ewan started full-time employment with Paradigm, he has matured into a completely different person from the one I met three years ago. He began as a very quiet individual, but he was always dedicated and committed to his work.
He is never late, always willing to learn and has developed a great sense of humour, he’s an absolute pleasure to work with.
Ewan has been instrumental in the completion of two large fencing contracts and continues to grow in confidence and ability on site. The progress he has made isn’t just professional; he has made real positive changes in his personal life too. Recently passing his driving test and committing to a personal fitness programme are just two examples and he has excelled in both”.
Ewan’s journey highlights that apprenticeships are not just about qualifications, they are about long-term opportunity, confidence and sustainable employment.
The Tigers pre-apprenticeship programme provided the foundation. The Joint Venture placement opened the door. Paradigm Landscapes provided the opportunity to progress and Ewan brought the commitment to his ongoing and personal and professional development.
As we celebrate Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2026, his story reminds us that career paths are not always linear but with the right support, opportunity and determination, lasting change is possible.
