We recently delivered an exciting project for our values aligned partner, Topek. The project was a refresh of the garden areas in a student accommodation in Edinburgh.
We were able to create three unique areas, thoughtfully designed to be useful to students and create an inviting environment where they can relax, reflect, and connect with nature. The gardens are full of symbolism, blending natural beauty with deeper meanings.
Stand Proud for Nature
As the name suggests, this garden emphasises the power and resilience of nature. The standout feature being the standing stones, symbolising strength and stability.
In this space, 80% of the plants are edible for humans. Among the key plants are the Elder and Dog Rose, both offering edible elements. Even the non-edible plants are valuable to wildlife, providing food and shelter. Birds will find plenty of berries and nesting spaces, making this garden a haven for both humans and animals.
A Step in the Right Direction
Designed for students seeking peace and relaxation, this area features seating, decks and benches, encouraging them to unwind and enjoy their surroundings.
The planting here reflects relationships, with a thoughtful blend of groupings and individual plants. Some plants are grouped in threes, fours, or fives, while others are paired or stand alone. This diverse planting arrangement symbolises the variety of social experiences students may have, whether they are surrounded by large groups, close friends, or spending time alone.
Nature’s Chaotic Beauty
Here, there is no set structure and plants are allowed to grow in a seemingly random, wild arrangement. Despite the initial appearance of disorder, this garden teaches an important lesson: beauty and comfort can be found even in chaos.
The colour palette in this area features purples and whites, with each colour serving a distinct purpose.
Purple flowers attract daytime pollinators such as bees, while white blooms cater to nocturnal pollinators such as moths, ensuring the garden buzzes with life both day and night.
